As the old saying goes, ‘home is where the heart is’; it’s also where some of the most exciting new tech is being introduced to revolutionise our daily lives. While the way our current homes operate has never been easier, with the introduction of the ‘Internet of Things’, also known as IoT, we can expect levels of convenience and productivity never seen before.

While we’re witnessing the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the smart home of the future with the explosive popularity of virtual assistants like Amazon Alexa, new technologies are set to usher in home-living thought only to be reserved for  science-fiction.

Defining IoT

Before jumping into what the future of IoT and smart home technology holds, it’s useful to have an understanding of what these phrases actually mean.

The Internet of Things basically acts as an umbrella term for any technologies that allows a device to connect to the internet. IoT-enabled systems collect data which is then used for monitoring and control purposes, while also transferring information to other devices via the internet.

The collected data is then analysed and used to perform a certain action to help someone with a particular task. For example, a smart fridge that is IoT-enabled can collect data on your food and drink consumption ‘noticing’ when you’re running low and ordering a shop without you having to lift a finger.

While the above is a simple example of the capabilities of IoT, the future of the sector, and its ability to simplify and streamline our lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined before, is becoming an increasingly exciting prospect.

What can we expect?

For those with the money, there are already a host of devices and appliances that are IoT augmented, such as smart fridges, lock systems and voice activated virtual assistants. However, the current generation of IoT devices is only the beginning of what this rapidly growing technology can offer the average homeowner.

The most likely development we will see in the future is IoT-enabled AI taking a much more involved role in the household, relying on a range of smart devices to offer an unparalleled level of convenience.

Going forward, this will automate everything, from tasks like the lighting level and opening and closing of doors to more specialised tasks like your thermostat finding the perfect temperature and your garden being automatically tended to. This will all derive from the data that your IoT systems have gathered about you, making their services unique to your needs.

IoT looks to radically transform the way we live, not just in our homes but on a much more global scale. With a projected market size of 1.6 trillion by 2025, app developers looking to remain ahead of the curve in an already competitive market will want to keep their finger on the pulse of the IoT revolution.
