Developing a mobile solution that would allow farmers and the agriculture industry to pre-screen for mycotoxin disease in dairy cows, enabling Micron to apply their smart science and core scientific competencies to the problem.

Background

Micron Bio-Systems is a company dedicated to developing cutting edge, product-based solutions and species-specific programs designed to improve animal health and performance for agribusiness.

The company was rapidly modernising to maintain its competitive advantage in the marketplace. As part of this strategy, mobile was identified as a way to deliver that advantage as well as increase direct customer interaction and customer loyalty.

Challenges

Data collection and analysis – the app would need to collect and review data on the most significant mycotoxin symptoms and allow for important data input to be further analysed so that a diagnostic report could guide the farmer in adapting feed and medication to cure the disease.

Following scientific methodology – any solution would need to follow critical scientific methodology in analysing data like forage warehouse conditions and annual milk yield, guided by Micron’s specialist expertise in microbiology, biochemistry, enzymology, and immunology.

Cross-platform – in order to maximise accessibility to farmers and agribusiness users, Micron wanted to develop a cross-platform solution for both iOS and Android.

Outcome

The application and the methodology developed represents an innovative new way of pre-screening cows to see if further testing is required.

Once the algorithm was coded and implemented in the app, further testing was done to make sure the data capturing was working properly, and the proper data-fields were imported into the back-end database for further analysis and reporting.

This first-of-its-kind cross-platform app is a much faster and cheaper way for farmers to see if they need to take any further action. Farmers and agriculture businesses can now find out whether it is worth investing in the lengthy and expensive mycotoxin testing procedure.

We contacted MyOxygen because of their experience in developing software in the Agriculture Sector. The MyOxygen team successfully developed an Android Application for managing the Mycotoxin Risk Assessment for Dairy Cows.
